Heirloom Caprese Salad

Hope you are having a great holiday weekend! We are still recovering from our 1 year old’s first birthday party…it was a blast, but he definitely had just a little bit too much cake! It’s time to load him up with veggies and fruit. There’s nothing better than to hit up the farmers market for that. Farmers markets are the best!

How could you not love looking at beautiful, brightly colored veggies and fruit and supporting your local farmers?

We have a farmers market in town on Sundays in the fall and summer. If we are in town you can always find us there Sunday morning. They are the best places to find local, fresh produce among other things like fresh cheese and bread. Tomatoes, being one of my favorite things, are abundant at the farmers market.

Typically I use the tomatoes from my garden but this week I spotted these heirloom tomatoes and decided to make a caprese salad with them.

This is the perfect summer salad that is easy to make.

I started by buying these heirloom tomatoes of all colors…

I then sliced the tomatoes…

And then cut the buffalo mozzarella and then washed and cut the stems off the fresh basil…

Then I assembled them on a plate with the tomato, mozzarella and basil and then repeated.

You can add a little sea salt and pepper to taste as well as a drizzle of balsamic vinegar or olive oil over the top of the salad. We usually eat this salad right away but you can store it covered until the next day. Heirloom tomatoes do not keep their flavor as well in the fridge so I suggest eating this right away.

4 heirloom tomatoes, washed and dried

1 large ball of Buffalo Mozzarella

Fresh Basil, wash and dried

Coarse sea salt and pepper to taste

Olive Oil or Balsamic Vinegar to taste

  1. Slice tomatoes into ½ inch thick slices and arrange on plate.
  2. Slice the buffalo mozzarella and add on top of tomato.
  3. Garnish each tomato/mozzarella stack with basil.
  4. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar or olive oil and sea salt and pepper.

Not only is this salad beautiful but it is tasty too!
